Why is chemistry important?
Chemistry is an extremely significant and beneficial subject because of the degree of application it has in our daily life. Chemistry is there all around this world, whether it be the food we eat, the medicines that we depend on for health betterment, the air we breath or even the nature around us.
Education
One of the main reasons students choose to study Chemistry is because it is a science that is applicable to many areas of studies for example medicine, engineering, ecology etc. “Chemistry sometimes is called the "central science" because it connects to sciences, such as biology, physics, geology and environmental science.” Hence, chemistry is a subject that broadens your possibilities of finding a job for the future.
Medicine:
Chemistry is the starting point of all medicine, it is the chemical reactions within our body that helps us battle infections or illnesses. Medicines are something we depend on in our life and so are doctors, we depend on them from birth to death to cure our illness and maintain us with a healthy body, in simple terms to help us live. If chemistry was not their, penicillin would have not been discovered and fatal viruses, bacterial infection and “minor cuts” (Science.ie, 2016) would have lead to severe diseases like blood poisoning. Anesthetics would’ve not been originated if chemistry did not exist, patients would’ve had to endure a great deal of pain during surgeries. We would’ve not had aspirin which is chemically called salicylic acid which is a drug that helps with “headaches and fever as well as helping to prevent strokes and heart attacks.” (Science.ie, 2016). Malfunctioning organs or organ in a patient would’ve been disguised if chemistry wasn’t there as Chemical tests in labs help us comprehend the health of a particular organ or organs, consequently helping doctors understand which part of the body or function is damaged. Chemical tests can determine the reason for the death of a person as well. Therefore, there are copious applicability’s chemistry provides us humans with making the subject a very influential and vital in the world.
Food:
Chemistry has a large correlation with food that we ingest daily. Food preservation is largely dependent on chemistry, for example food preservation is carried out by the addition of sulfur dioxide. If food preservation was unattainable, exporting and importing of food items would’ve been harder. Pure drinking water would’ve been harder to access and unclean water could’ve lead to “deadly waterborne diseases such as cholera, dysentery and typhoid”(Science.ie, 2016), however because of chemical use of chlorine, the bacteria is killed preventing humans from waterborne diseases. Its through chemical tests that we are able to distinguish the different substances in a food item. The tests also show which kind nutrients are beneficial and poisonous for our body. This gives us a chance to identify the nutrients we need to eat to protect ourselves from illnesses “such as rickets, osteoporosis and scurvy” (Science.ie, 2016). Chemistry has also helped us manufacture tablets that contain various types of vitamins which can be taken if we are lacking that particular vitamin.
Therefore, chemistry is a subject that plays an immense role in this world and is tremendously significant.
